I remember high school, when I envied those who lived in town and walked home after school while I was stuck on the bus....in my youth I spent hours climbing trees to read books and playing Little House on the Prairie on our farm. I've fancied myself a writer. I was devastated if I missed an episode of One Life To Live. I've devoured books on the Civil War...serial killers...Alaska...ghosts....and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I do still read Stephen King. no more soap operas. so many obsessions have come and gone. so much to learn and see and do. to experience. I've changed jobs and seen a whole different side of the world. for real. we all have our jobs and our roles and we need to respect one another. don't trash your table when you go out to eat. don't intentionally track in mud at a business. everyone is dealing with their own shit. don't add to it. I'm still fascinated with Abe Lincoln and Jesse James and Lizzie Borden and Bonnie and Clyde. they were people who will be remembered. I am just a regular deb. that's who I am. I am a daughter and a sister. a wife and a mom. a grandma. a dreamer. I won't get a book or a documentary when I die. I'll just blow away in the wind. but that's ok. that's ok. just trying to make the most of what I have. I won't ever go to college and get a degree, but I have learned so much. we've raised 3 good kids. that's my contribution to the world. my legacy. and what a world we live in....Civil War reenactments and amazonprime and Netflix. Ghost Adventures. the internet. you can learn a lot just hanging out at home. is it all useful? eh. does it even matter? I'm living my best life here. and I am happy. Kevin picked a lodge for our anniversary trip next week to Wisconsin. road trips are fun. carefree. we'll live in the moment. and just be together.

Thunder In The Woods 2020

hadn't been in a few, but boot scooted right up to Corydon County Lake Park after work and got there in time to hear the cannons booming. it's like you're right there...you're just milking your cow or working in the garden or hanging out the wash and there are soldiers hiding behind trees shooting at each other. you can hear them yelling out orders and smell the smoke. then they're running right at you....and you're part of history. then they go back to camping in their little tents in the woods. It's a beautiful location. how cool would it be to be a reenacter? if only I was tough enough....imagine how close these guys get. and it honors those who lived through it.

Beloved Hula Hoop Tree outside Amber has come down May 1 2020

(I'm so glad we drove by to see her last fall!) JONES COUNTY, Iowa (KWWL) -- A beloved roadside attraction just outside the town of Amber in Jones County has come down. The Hula Hoop Tree had become a topic of concern for Jones County leaders due to liability concerns as the tree is located just off of County Road 23. The tree was also dead, causing concern for the landowner as Hula Hoops continued to be added and for the county as it was near the right of way of the road. The tree was taken down this week. During a September supervisors meeting, concerns were raised that there was no area for visitors to safely pull off and park. The Jones County Supervisors agreed to reduce the speed limit on the stretch of road from 55 m.p.h to 35 m.p.h to attempt to make the area safer. The tree first began gaining fame around 2015 after a carpool group noticed a single hula hoop stuck on a limb. Georgia Sack and Chris Nadge were both part of that carpool group and spoke to KWWL News in September about the history of the tree and their hope for its future. The two also run a facebook page for the tree that has over 5,000 followers. They made the announcement the tree had been taken down earlier this week saying, "It is with very mixed feelings and heavy hearts that we have to post that Her Majesty will now just live in the memories, photographs, & videos of all who've visited. Like the COVID-19 situation that we've all been enduring, decisions & actions are implemented for the safety of the public. We will miss her VERY MUCH, but we are relieved that She's been taken down before any tragedy befell a visitor." Nadge said since the quarantine began and school was canceled for the remainder of the year the tree had been getting extra attention and visitors. He also said there was concern with visitors crossing a barbed wire fence into a pasture that is private property.

September 15th we went to Coopers Cemetery in Stanberry...the road there was certainly creepy. and cemetery surrounded by trees on 3 sides...and we. heard. crashing. in. the. woods. deer? squirrel? ghostly footprints?

Babies crying, an old man appearing out of nowhere by the forest line coming towards you swinging a lantern, then disappearing. Sticks breaking in the woods constantly like someone is walking out in the woods. Apparitions,voices, and ghost lights have been seen at this cemetery. onward to Maryville, to an item long on our bucket list....Workman Chapel. it was creepy behind the church in broad daylight, and I couldn't stop looking at that amazing tree to the side of the church. Workman’s Chapel is arguably one of the most famous haunted “houses” around the Maryville area. Nestled in Burlington Junction, Missouri, the supposedly haunted church has been the center of rumors, makeshift documentaries and paranormal investigators to try their hand at speaking with ghosts. Rumors of stabbings, hangings, and one giant, murderous lumberjack linger around the one-roomed church. However, most of these rumors boil down to urban legends and kids trying to scare each other. Lester Workman, the caretaker and descendant of the original owner who died in 2011, said in interviews he couldn’t recall any evidence of any of those things happening. There was no woman stabbed to death. No one was hung from a gnarled tree. There is no murderous, lumberjack giant. However, two Civil War veterans were buried in the Workman Chapel cemetery and were supposedly part of a cavalry unit, according to Workman.These could explain why some people see ghostly soldiers or the sounds of invisible horses. Senior Connor Beshears went out to the chapel his freshman year. “I don’t remember a lot from my trip there,” Beshears said. “It was at a weird time of my life. Sure, it was creepy, but I didn’t get anything supernatural from it.”

Tracy had never been. we stood in 'that' spot...and toasted our friendship and ghostly adventures with a Happy Juice at Good Time Charlie's right around the corner. True crime junkies have likely heard about the mystery of Skidmore, Missouri. The small town is notorious for the violent acts of murder that have occurred there, and the fact that many of them remain unsolved. A new SundanceTV documentary, No One Saw A Thing, delves into one crime in particular that's happened there, and the theories surrounding Skidmore, Missouri suggest that the doc will be one wild ride. ccording to the New York Post, the six-episode true crime series turns its eye on some of the more grisly crimes committed in Skidmore — namely, the 1981 murder of Ken McElroy, which was reportedly witnessed by dozens of residents and yet somehow yielded no criminal charges. Other tragedies like the 2001 disappearance of Branson Kayne Perry, and the 2004 death of Bobbie Jo Stinnett, which took place in the same town, are also explored. There are a few theories about why this town finds itself at the center of so many gruesome events, and why no one seems to be talking even more than 30 years later about who is responsible for McElroy's death. The place is at once shrouded in mystery, and full of people who are just trying to live a normal life away from the prying eyes who want answers. The filmmaker behind No One Saw A Thing, Ari Belkin, thinks that Skidmore exists both mentally and geographically in a place that breeds vigilante justice — McElroy was allegedly the "town bully," which is suspected have contributed to his murder. "An element that goes unnoticed in today’s society is the legacy, the influence, that vigilante phenomena have in culture and society," Belkin told the Post in the piece linked above. "Especially people in that rural area of Missouri, who grew up on Jesse James, grew up on the Bald Knobbers — one of the first vigilante groups in America — grew up on stories of outlaws in the Wild West, taking the law into their own hands. It prioritizes solving problems with violence." Of course, there are internet sleuths trying to piece together the mysteries of Skidmore, and investigate why its history is so heavily dotted with crime. Some Reddit users have suggested that the incidents have spawned from drugs. Others have blamed "small town thinking" for the violence, suggesting that when you grow up knowing absolutely everyone in a tiny town, the rivalries you form can grow more intense and violent. And on another note, some online sleuths are inclined to believe that McElroy's murder started a chain reaction of intergenerational trauma that has affected the whole town ever since. Given that so many witnesses allegedly saw his murder happen, yet no one came forward, perhaps their descendants and the descendants of people involved in the killing itself have gone on to unhealthily grapple with that baggage, and potentially turn violent themselves. There are also some who think rather than seeing McElroy's death in particular as a case of vigilante justice, it's worth questioning if the townspeople felt like they were acting in the case of self-defense, given that McElroy was suspected to be violent himself. It's undeniable that Skidmore's history is odd, but it's important to remember that these theories are just speculation. Despite its notorious reputation, Skidmore is still where real people make their homes to this day, and many of them probably want nothing to do with the sinister happenings. "It's just another small town, the same as all the others," Nodaway County Sheriff Ben Espey told CBS News. "It kind of upsets me when I keep hearing McElroy this and McElroy that. ... This area is rolling hill farmland, a lot of common-sense people. Crime rates are low, drugs are as they are everywhere. But it's not near the issue it was five years ago." We may never know exactly why Skidmore is the way it is, but hopefully, No One Saw A Thing will shed a little light on what has for decades been a shadowy series of events.
